What is Xiaomi Vela?
Xiaomi Vela is a highly adaptable IoT embedded software system from Xiaomi. It relies on the open-source NuttX kernel , which is scalable and resource-efficient. With just 8KB of memory , Vela supports multiple SoC architectures, allowing it to power everything from wearables and smart sensors to sophisticated industrial controllers.
Since its open-source release in 2024 as Xiaomi’s OpenVela , it has become a cornerstone of its HyperConnect ecosystem to facilitate deep integration between Xiaomi and third-party smart products.
Close Alignment with the NuttX Community
At the conference, Gregory Nutt , founder of NuttX, delivered a keynote titled “NuttX and OpenVela Join Forces to Establish an Open AIoT Ecosystem.” He thanked Xiaomi for its contribution, stating that OpenVela’s adoption of NuttX was “win-win for both communities” and enriched both platforms.
Xiaomi has had a positive influence on NuttX since 2017 , with Xiaomi developers contributing over 50% of the community code for three consecutive years. The organization is also focused on making NuttX a Top-Level Apache Project by 2022.
Universal adoption and explosive expansion
According to Du Chao , Director of OpenVela Open Source, the ecosystem has seen widespread adoption and explosive expansion:
- Installed on nearly 100 types of devices
- Thousands of Xiaomi and partner brand products
- More than 140 million cumulative installations
Additionally, more than 70 chip manufacturers, service providers, and equipment manufacturers are part of the OpenVela ecosystem. Currently, 354 chip platforms and development boards are supported , making OpenVela one of the most active open source IoT ecosystems in the world.
Building the future of smart connectivity
The success of the Xiaomi Vela system speaks volumes about the company’s leadership in open-source IoT innovation. With the adoption of lightweight architecture, international developer collaboration, and multi-industry collaboration, Xiaomi continues to champion a smarter, more connected ecosystem under its HyperConnect vision .
