Google cambia el ciclo de lanzamiento de Android – Qué significa para Xiaomi

Google is implementing a paradigm shift in how it releases the Android Open Source Project code, starting in 2026. This technical change means that the Android source code will only be updated twice a year, down from four times previously. The purpose of this change is to improve platform stability and ensure smooth operation for the developer community, allowing them to focus on the most important versions. The impact of this change can be seen in the Xiaomi ecosystem, particularly regarding the development of HyperOS.

Understanding the new AOSP publishing cycle

Google has confirmed that, from now on, the AOSP code will be released in the second and fourth quartiles of each year. This means that instead of the eight versions previously provided annually through quarterly updates, Google has now opted to reduce it to four versions. This strategy ensures that Google focuses on major releases in Q2 and minor releases in Q4.

The decision to have an organized schedule of rapid releases is to support the stable development model. Although code releases won’t be as frequent, Google clarified that security patches will not be affected. These essential updates will be released monthly through the security branch.

Effect on custom ROMs and HyperOS ports

The decline in source code updates is bringing about a shift in the custom ROM landscape. Traditionally, Xiaomi fans relied on AOSP custom ROMs to support the long-term use of their devices. With the decrease in source code updates, fans can now depend on HyperOS ports for feature updates for their devices.

Feature Old calendar New calendar (2026)
Publication frequency 4 times a year Twice a year
Main focus Quarterly increases Older (Q2) and Younger (Q4)
Security patches Monthly Monthly (no changes)
Development branch Several branches android-latest-release

In short, Google’s decision to open-source Android twice a year aims to create a more stable environment for smartphone manufacturers. While it may affect the frequency of third-party software updates, Xiaomi users will always be able to enjoy a fast and up-to-date environment from official sources.
